AUGUST 14-16 PAMPA, TEXAS DODGE RODEO: ALL CONTESTANTS MUST WEAR BACK NUMBERS AND TIMED EVENT CONTESTANTS ARE REQUIRED TO RIDE IN THE GRAND ENTRY.
News From the Office:
What is a Director’s job on a Board in any organization? In any association or organization a director is elected by his/her peers to represent ideas and changes. A Director’s responsibility is to pass rules and regulations in the best interest of the Association. Granted not everyone is going to agree on the Director’s decision but he/she is elected to the position to make final decisions.
The 2008 Board was presented with issues regarding improvement of the Association. Specific areas of concern included a system of checks and balances, entry system, and how to increase in numbers in both the membership and rodeos. One of the main concerns of the Board is to elevate the TCRA to a professional level instead of the “amateur level.”
The first issue is establishing a system for checks and balances. Members are losing numerous dollars in fines not collected, fines not turned in, and non member dollars not collected. This loss of revenue could be substantial added money at the finals. The Board feels a central entry system that is run on a professional level is a place to start. With this system all member and non-member turnout fines will be flagged and each rodeo will have a uniform set of books sent to the rodeo secretary as well as to the TCRA office. A central entry system will help control the dollars the Association is currently losing; your dollars as a member.
Question of concern: Why weren’t bids taken for a central entry system? Linda McConnell made a central entry system proposal a year ago to the Board as a suggestion to try and help the Association. The majority of the Board felt Linda could handle this job. Linda will be on a one year probation and if the Board is not satisfied with the results; bids will be taken.
Question: How much is it going to cost me? Each person will pay $3.00. If you enter three or four events, $3.00 is all you will pay. Yes, the Board heard “we are going to be nickeled and dimed to death.” Central entry systems can cost anywhere from $5.00 to $10.00 per contestant in other Associations. The Board felt $3.00 is a reasonable fee since the cost of gas is over $3.00 per gallon and close to $4.00 per gallon for diesel.
Question: How many can we enter? Each phone call can enter 4 contestants per event. This should handle a family by being able to enter 4 teams, 4 calf ropers, 4 barrel racers and etc. This will also help to solve one call filling up a performance.
Rough Stock Contestants: Numbers are very limited in your events. Total entries in 2007 were 6200 timed event contestants and 900 rough stock contestants. In the past, the finals fund has been divided equally among the events, and as you can see the timed events shared a large percentage of their money with the rough stock to make equal money at the finals. In 2008, $3.00 of the finals fund money is going to be split equally among the events at the finals. Once again, the timed events have agreed to share equally with the rough stock on the base pay at the finals. The break down of the finals fund money was explained in the last paper. Again, the Board hopes $3.00 will not cause any hardships on the rough stock contestants. Your events as well as the timed events will benefit from a checks and balances system.
On a final note, your Directors have had three different sessions discussing the best solution for the growth and problems of the Association. The Directors listened to the general membership at Vernon and took their vote into consideration before making a final decision. The majority of the Board felt a central entry system would alleviate these problems. With a more professional entry system to better monitor the turnouts, fine collections, and non- member fees, and write in entries, the Board feels the new system will promote the Association on a more professional level, plus improve our opportunities to solicit corporate sponsors.
